Derek Shepard, a young energetic police officer, vows to avenge the murder of his father and bring to justice a notorious crime lord. As the romance heats up, so does the danger when Rebecca sees more than she bargained for. Soon after, their affair is no longer a secret and they in turn become the hunted. With threats of corruption, they exhaust their only option, Jimmy and the protection of the FBI. Jimmy is reluctant to accept them into the program, but Derek’s persistence wins out. He distances himself from Rebecca in hopes of keeping her safe, but the danger increases when he finds out that the witness protection program is not what it seems.
The stakes are now raised, as Derek must race to find Rebecca before his enemies do. He faces much resistance and doesn’t know who can he trust. His attempts to find Rebecca seem hopeless until he uncovers some essential clues. The only problem is that he needs Jimmy’s help to piece them together. Now Jimmy is torn between what is right and what he has become.
Derek’s judgment gets clouded as his emotions begin controlling his decisions. He starts toying with ideas that he would have never considered before. His final decisions lead him to not only a showdown with his enemies, but also to the hardest decision of his life. He must now make one final choice, be with the woman he loves or convict the man he has sought after for the better part of his life.

The story opens with two 10 years olds who are best friends, Derek and Jimmy. Derek's father is a police detective working on a high profile case and as he gets close to arresting the criminals he is gunned down right in front of of Derek and Jimmy. Derek's mother passed away several years earlier so Jimmy's family takes him in and raises him as their own.
After high school graduation both young men know they want careers in law enforcement but they take two different paths, Jimmy goes on to a university while Derek goes to community college and then enters the Police Academy. They still try to stay close but it's hard with their schedules, but they remain best friends.
Later, Jimmy takes a special course and is recruited into the FBI, Derek works hard, and gets promoted to detective. While working on his other cases Derek still works the old case his father was working on and tries to catch his father's killer.
Jimmy ends up working in the Witness Protection Unit of the FBI and finds out his job was a far cry from what he thought it would be. Derek falls in love with a beautiful woman he meets at the grocery store, after an overnight tryst she disappears, but leaves a note that they can't continue to see each other. While tracking his main suspect for his father's murder, he discovers she is involved with that suspect. Both he and Jimmy question their next steps and the book starts to take some dangerous twists and turns.
I LIKED IT!!!!
It is hard to believe this is the author's first full length novel. He has a writing style that just draws you in from page 1. The story has it all, it is thrilling, suspenseful, includes a friend's betrayal, and a little romance. It will also make you think twice about the FBI's Witness Protection Program. I can only hope and pray that those details came from the author's imagination. This story spans quite a few years and shows how life can be turned upside down quickly with a few seeming unrelated incidents. If you enjoy true crime, suspense or thriller stories this is a book you won't want to miss. I am looking forward for more thrilling stories from this author.

As the novel opens, we learn of the strong bond that exists between Chicago Police Detective Ralph Shephard and his ten-year-old son, Derek.
Ralph is working on a major case and after a lengthy investigation and the loss of a partner, he continues to search for evidence to bring down underworld crime lord, Victor Lagano. Just as he is close to getting sufficient evidence to make an arrest, he's gunned down in front of Derek and Derek's lifelong friend, Jimmy.
The boys grow up. Jimmy attends a university and Derek goes to community college and enters the police academy. Jimmy takes a course that is run by the FBI and is recruited into a so called specialized unit of the FBI, run by Marcus Web and dealing with witness protection. However, the unit isn't all it's supposed to be.
Derek moves up to the detecitve branch. He continues to hunt for evidence on the man who was responsible for his father's murder, Victor Lagano. Getting evidence on this underworld figure is very hard and just when he is becoming discouraged, he meets a woman named Rebacca and they have an instant attraction and overnight affair. The next morning, Rebecca is gone, leaving a note about how much she liked Derek but that they couldn't see each other any more. But, fate changes and when Derek goes to a concert, he sees Rebecca there with her husband, Victor Lagano.
The rest of the story details Rebecca attempting to get information about Lagano's crimes and giving it to Derek so he can bring Lagano down. If this happens, Rebecca will go into the Witness Protection run by Marcus and this can have disasterous results.
For a first novel, and without major editing, the author provides excellent action and tells a good story.
A couple of flaws; when Derek sees his father gunned down, he's still a teenager. He attends college, enters the academy and moves up to become a detective. When he gets into the detective unit, Frank Szymanski is still there. Frank was Derek's father's supervisor. This would be a time over ten years since Ralph's death and people don't stay in hazardous duty positions for over ten years.
Also, when Marcus recruits Jimmy, it's done in the back seat of a car. Even though this is an undercover unit, that wouldn't happen.
In addition, Marcus referrs to Jimmy as James and he goes by Marcus. Cops don't call each other by their full names.
It also bothered me, the level of coincidence that of all the women Derek could meet, he meets and falls in love with Frank Lagano's wife.
Great book! A must read for any suspense/mystery enthusiast. The author really entangles the reader and this is a hard book to put down.
